Here Come the Judges
They met 16 years ago getting ready for the Redondo Beach 10k/5k Costume Contest, and they never looked back. She told him: "I don't mind meeting you at the race, but I'll be dressed as Napoleon." Since then Robin has won the costume contest 17 times! They fell in love – Robin Charin an entertainer, and Mark Ferris a surfer, foster grandparent to JayR, a ventriloquist dummy, and retired English teacher -- and discovered that they shared a sense of humor and a love of dressing up.
Last year marked the end of their costume contest entry days, and organizers of the contest have appointed the two honorary judges at this year's contest, which begins at 6:30am on Sunday, February 2. And, of course, they'll come dressed as...what else, judges!
Maybe it's because Robin has been in the entertainment industry, first as a Broadway musical performer for 10 years, then as owner of her own company RT Clown - www.rtClown.com for the past 29 years - that she and Mark have been able to conceive such creative get-ups. She has entertained at celebrations ranging from kids' birthday parties to company picnics.
Every year, their fans would await Robin and Mark's costume contest entries. "One year," she reports, "Mark came as Sponge Bob, and another year as Bumble Bea. Early on, I was part of a six-pack, the Running Redondo Ritas, and my title was Carmen Burrita, dressed in a Carmen Miranda costume. Last year, our opus was Mark dressed as Senior Superman and I as Past Her Prime Barbie Doll." It was more fun.
